Why this book

Most guides oversell it. This one tells you how cold it really is.

Cold exposure has moved from fringe to mainstream — and for good reason. The science is compelling: reduced inflammation, accelerated recovery, improved sleep, sharper mental focus, elevated mood, and a measurable boost to immune function. The problem is that most guides either oversell the benefits or gloss over how genuinely difficult it is to start — and sustain — a regular practice.

Into the Cold is different.

Max Munson is a world champion ice swimmer, certified advanced-level Wim Hof Method instructor, and — until his mid-fifties — someone who had never voluntarily entered freezing water. He knows what it takes to get in, what stops most people from ever trying, and exactly how to build a practice that sticks.

Just Get In

It was the spring of 2020, and like every other swimmer, my teammates and I were frustrated. The Covid lockdown had shut down every pool in the city, and for weeks we had missed our daily swim. Then one afternoon two of my friends from the team called with a solution: a nearby lake. I agreed, even though something felt off about it — the water was still bitterly cold. But not to be intimidated, I said yes.

When we arrived at the shore, I understood what "bitterly cold" actually meant: 8 degrees Celsius (46 degrees Fahrenheit). Before I could say a word, they both stripped down to their swimsuits, waded in, and started swimming across the lake. Just like that. I stood on the shore watching them, equal parts baffled and impressed. I could see with my own eyes that it was possible — but it went against everything I had learned in my first 50 years of life: if the water is too cold, you don't go in.

Regardless of how strange it felt, I took off the rest of my clothes, put on my cap and goggles, and followed them into the frigid water. My body felt the shock of the cold like a thousand needles at once. It was powerfully uncomfortable and yet thrilling. After a few freestyle strokes I realized that I was doing it: I was swimming in extremely cold water! And it felt amazing. My body felt a jolt of energy as strong as the incredible thrill of doing something I had previously thought impossible. But then after a few more strokes I started wondering how long I could do it, and what would happen if I froze and could no longer move. What if I sank to the bottom of the lake?

Meet the author

Max Munson

A former skeptic who once stood frozen and furious on the shore of a freezing lake wondering what on earth he had agreed to, he is now the World Champion Ice Swimmer in the 50m and 100m freestyle in his age group.

Max has been a certified advanced-level Wim Hof Method Instructor since 2022, has trained hundreds of participants across Europe and the United States, and holds multiple Czech masters swimming records.

He is also an entrepreneur, a restaurateur, a founding editor of the Prague Revue, and a Masters swimmer and coach. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he earned a B.A. in literature from Arizona State University and lives in Prague, Czech Republic, with his wife, Marcela, and their two children. He also loses arguments with his border collie, Roni. Marcela remains unconvinced that cold showers are better than cold lakes, and is probably right.

Pick a number between 7 and 30.

That is your commitment: cold exposure every single day for that many days in a row. It does not matter how long your first session is. What matters is that you do it, and that each day you extend it by at least one slow breath.

Write the number down. Start tomorrow.

Take the plunge.
